Well, the Z85230 has one significant improvement: larger FIFO. Without that, I wouldn't be able to run 56kbps in interrupt mode. I can't use DMA due to that damned write cycle timing incompatibility with my PCI/ISA bridge - sometimes the transmitted frames are corrupt.
I replaced the Z85C30 of my PI2 with a Z85230 - no problem whatsoever.
