With RH 5.1 and with you :-) /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit in RH 5.1 will work good
if and only if you are:
1. use lilo (not like me) and
2. have kernel boot image in /boot/vmlinuz or in /somewhere/something-2.0.34

In all other cases /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit will remove /lib/modules/preferred then
will call 'depmod -a preferred', so depmod will not generate modules.dep :-((
Take look at /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit ...
