Are you sure about this? I downloaded pre-patch-2.1.99-1 and applied to 2.1.98 and then applied mtrr-patch-v1.16 without any problems. This is what did to produce mtrr-patch-v1.17, so I'm sure it works. Can you try this again? Are you sure you had a clean 2.1.98 source tree?

No, don't do that. 2.1.98 is broken. You could also try mtrr-patch-v1.17 which fixes a spurious warning message. It happens to have been produced against 2.1.99-pre1.
