I am having the same problem. It started shortly after I upgraded to a
more experimental Xserver (XFree86's new SVGA server has faster support
for my S3 968 card), so I assumed it was that. You haven't by any chance
upgraded to it too?

It isn't fatal, so I haven't actually pursued it (tape backup and SCSI bus
issues have been taking precedence until recently).
