This reminds me of my spurious ppp problems. Sometimes it just hangs up for no
apparant reason (log just says "ppp: hang up").

When I start it again, my modem just clicks for an instant, and that was all.
Only when I do it again, it will dial again and reconnect. Until now, I thought
that I was doing something wrong. But then I can't think of anything that should
cause a hangup.

This behaviour hasn't changed through all the later 2.1 series upto (now) 2.1.95.
