Subject3c595 vortex problems under high network loads

My networking locks up under high network load (always) on my
machine. It does this with 2.0.33-SMP and 2.1.89-SMP. It
takes a bit longer under 2.1.89 though. To attain the kind
of network traffic that causes the lockup I'm usually ftping
a large file from a nearby machine (10 bit network ~660k/sec
transfer rate). The lockup has occured anywhere from 39M - 400M
    into the ftp.

Nothing is logged via syslog (that I can see in the files),
    but on stdout I get:

eth0: Transmit error, Tx status register 90.

ifconfiging the network down then up again seems to return the
    networking to normal.

a couple of week ago I tried downloading the latest 3c59x.c file
and compiling it with 2.0.33 smp, but the problem remained.
