You mean IMAP ? Its been done as they say
The Mutt folks were adding some nice code for dotlocking. One problem with mailers is that most of them suck codewise. You certainly dont want pine or nmh to be setgid anything. Mutt is heavily audited but has still had holes found in it.
Because of this the Mutt people were adding an external dotlocking program so that anyone could dotlock their own mailbox via the dotlocking tool, safely and without themselves being setuid/setgid
