I just downloaded the tomsrtbt-1.7.88 package, and tried booting it on my laptop. When the kernel starts up, it turns the backlight off, which naturally makes it kind of hard to use the system. From what I hear, this is due to mis-identification of the CL7555 video chip by the kernel.
Fortunately, this problem can be easily fixed by #undef'ing CONFIG_VIDEO_SVGA in the arch/i386/boot/video.S file. Evidently, this is the default behavior in the 2.1.x kernels, so I don't think making this change would have any negative consequences.
