You need to apply ac8 with a version of patch that deletes files it zeroes or at least set the options to do so. I'd not realised that specific trap.
Old versions of patch leave a zero length checksum.c that Make uses in preference to checksum.S.
rm arch/i386/lib/checksum.c should fix the problem
