My experience on hdparm based totally on hdparm's man page :-( You may try many things but BE CAREFULL ! Some settings can hang your machine ! It's also important that your chipset on mainbord is directly supported or not. Because it's not fair comparision to check a FreeBSD system using UDMA and native motherbord support against a Linux system with PIO mode and with no native motherboard support.
