    Spoken too fast.
    After rm -rf kernel tree, tar xvf it, and patching, I have:
    (0)pern:~% free
    total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 62900 59048 3852 13092 4120 41672
    -/+ buffers/cache: 13256 49644
    Swap: 128484 7604 120880

    and the buffer cache is *really* persistent (I start netscape and it is
    swapping like mad).
