I wouldn't call myself a guru, but here is some info that may be of use.

We currently run over 100 Linux SMP systems to serve Deja News. This
includes our database servers, news machines and the web servers. Our
uptime exceeds 99% and most downtime is hardware related. We currently
are serving over 5 Million pages per day for more than 2 Million unique
visitors. During peak load, this equates to more than 40 documents per
second. Is that heavy enough for you?
