SubjectRe: Reducing the size of the kernel
I have 2 cents also:

I propose removing all but panic formatting strings
to user level processes. I have an example of it
to show what it would look like, if there is interest.

It would take tens of hours of work to do the full
project, so I would need tentative agreement based on
the example before I would go to that much effort.

There are several benefits:

1. Locked memory is reduced (both the strings and
reduced needs for the log buffer).

2. finer control over event (kernel message) generation:
at compile time, generation time and display time.

3. Internationalization aid (All formatting strings
would be extracted to a few files which, when
translated and linked into the console display module,
would emit the translated kernel messages).
