If you are using the famous Redhat(tm) Distribution 5.0/5.1 ?5.2?, there is a infamous caveat about tar. In '/etc/nsswitch.conf' are lots of references to nis, or yp or nisplus. I really don't remember =). If you remove the refs (assuming you are not using yp,nis, or nis+) tar will run at normal speed =).
