Just got finished loading and testing 2.1.129pre2. There still seems to be a problem with PCMCIA ethernet and this kernel version.
pcmcia-cs-3.0.6-Nov-10. intel 586/233MMX
1. After a minimal amount of load (~100 packets), I receive:
lapi kernel: eth0: transmit timed out, tx_status 00 status e601. lapi kernel: eth0: Interrupt posted but not delivered -- IRQ blocked by another lapi kernel: Flags; bus-master 1, full 0; dirty 61 current 61. lapi kernel: Transmit list 00000000 vs. c29c22d0. lapi kernel: 0: @c29c2200 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 1: @c29c2210 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 2: @c29c2220 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 3: @c29c2230 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 4: @c29c2240 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 5: @c29c2250 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 6: @c29c2260 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 7: @c29c2270 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 8: @c29c2280 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 9: @c29c2290 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 10: @c29c22a0 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 11: @c29c22b0 length 8000002a status 8000002a lapi kernel: 12: @c29c22c0 length 8000002a status 8000002a lapi kernel: 13: @c29c22d0 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 14: @c29c22e0 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: 15: @c29c22f0 length 8000002a status 0000002a lapi kernel: eth0: Resetting the Tx ring pointer.
And the ethernet dies. Rebooting back into 2.1.125 _DID NOT_ solve the problem. I had to do a hard-reboot to get it fixed.
That card is
Socket 0: 3Com 3c575-TX Fast EtherLink XL 0 network 3c575_cb 0 eth0
2. To get 2.1.129pre2 to compile, I had to apply the following patch:
--- fd.c.~1~ Sun Nov 15 18:12:42 1998 +++ fd.c Sun Nov 15 18:27:53 1998 @@ -58,6 +58,9 @@ proc_permission /* permission */ };

-static struct dentry_operations proc_dentry_operations = +struct dentry_operations proc_dentry_operations = { NULL, /* revalidate */ NULL, /* d_hash */ because it was complaining about not finding proc_dentry_operations in fd.c.

G'day!
