But VFAT can't store filenames differing only in case or containing some strange characters, so some translation is needed anyway.
I would use UMSDOS-over-VFAT instead of pure VFAT if it was compatible with VFAT. Then when I run out of space on Linux partitions, I could quickly create a symlink to an umssynced directory on VFAT partition and move something there, without breaking ownerships, symlinks etc.
