Linus Torvalds was overheard saying: : >Exactly the same problem with Cyrix 6x86, UP, 64MB, egcs-1.1a, : >binutils-2.9.1, Had no problems from 2.0.95 to 2.0.125. : : Can you check with a different compiler? Okay, just finished all my compiles. On the exact same system (egcs 1.1b, binutils 2.9.1.0.15, modutils 2.1.121), I can get 2.1.125 to compile and lock solid after uncompressing for both UP and SMP systems. But, under 2.1.126 everything works fine. I'm presently running Pentium UP and PPro SMP 2.1.126 systems.
This is using the default "-O2" optimization.
