I raised the process limit to 2048 and the number of open files in include/linux/fs.h to 8192 (or higher) to do a make -j zImage with 2.1.125. During the compilation top died with "Help! Too many processes". Besides that, it took hours to complete with a 333Mhz P2 with 128Mb physical RAM and a single 1024Mb swap partition. Something in the Makefiles seems to be changed.
