As long as you leave devfs as it is: sitting on top of the VFS interface like any other FS, it should just be a matter of an implementation detail in the UDI layer. Does UDI include default device names as part of its device registration abstraction?
Of course, you'll have to give up using the 1.2.13 kernel ;-) Unless you're a masochist and want to back-port devfs :-(
