I had the same problem with ac1 on my K6-200 on a VIA-based motherboard. I suspected the changes in setup.c that are in ac1 and ac2 but ac2 works fine while ac1 fails with the hang. Actually mine says:
Loading linuxac1 Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
and that's where it hangs. No keyboard control, nada.
For good measure I compiled kernels 2.1.122, .123, .124 and .125 (plain) They all boot fine. .125ac2 boots fine also.
For what it's worth I boot my kernels with syslinux, although I tried booting ac1 with loadlin just to see if that made a difference (on this particular machine linux is on /dev/hdc so I can't use lilo until someone hacks it to allow me to boot off drive D :) the BIOS supports it...)
Hope this helps you track down the problem (though ac2 working suggests it's been fixed already, if perhaps only for me :))

P.S. I reckon I've rebooted my machine more in the past 4 hours trying out .122 -> .125 than I have in the past 4 months... Previous to today I've been running .103 since it came out, with no hassles. Got over 70 days uptime in one stretch :)
