It's worse than that. Current filesystems don't let you fiddle with the
permission bits on a symlink. I had hoped we could just set a permission
bit on the symlink and then everything else would be handled invisibly. But
my experiments earlier seem to show that playing with symlink permissions
just doesn't work currently. I thought you could do it in C.
