xawtv does quite alot before mapping the window: open the grabber
device, tune in the first station from config file etc. It might be
a bttv bug. Turning on capture is triggered by the MapNotify event.

You might try to set the verbose level with "xawtv -v n" to 1 or 2.
Then watch what xawtv does and where it hangs.
