No, it's not just an optimization thing. E. g., the bswap command
that is used in the bytesex conversions is only available on 486s
and up.

Actually, I saw quite a few (Intel) 386 motherboards that had an 287
as FPU. It was sitting on a small piggy-back board along with 1 PAL
and was plugged into the 387 socket.
