Really? So who decides on the names in Documentation/devices.txt? Is
there no argument there? Or has it come and gone for SCSI discs?
I expect most people would use the standard names. Those who really
hate the names would create symlinks. Devfs can work in this mode
too.

The names have been suggestions, but system administrators who didn't
like them were always free to use different arguments with mknod, or
edit the MAKEDEV script, etc. Since the names weren't enshrined in
code, it avoided the argument. People who wanted their own special
names could do so in the privacy of their own systems. (In general,
usually but not always, the distributions generally stayed with the
recommended names.)
