I tried to use it, way back when. No Way. There were at least two really-hard-to-find inode holes in there so that files could not be deleted, and the file system could not be unmounted. :-(
Note that with 2.1 and its cool dcache, an IFS might actually be buildable without the hoops the old code had to jump through in order to go where it wanted to go.
I'd certainly _not_ use the old code as any kind of base for a reimplementation, though. Too much has changed.
