I might have some info which could be relevant.

About six months ago I reported a problem which occured under a
Linux-2.0.x server/IRIX 5.3 client combination (Linux 2.0.x
server/Solaris 2.4 client, Linux 2.0.x server/Linux 2.0.x client, IRIX
5.3 server/IRIX 5.3 client, IRIX 5.3 server/Linux 2.0.x client were
all fine).

I was essentially told that I'm crazy. :)

SOMETIMES, when running ld (happens with various software) software
I've written, contributed software from others) under Linux 2.0.x for
the server/client combination above, I get a "Can't create output file
(No such file or directory)" error. If I do an "ls" the output file
(we'll call it foo) has been created with a size of 0 but if I do a
"ls foo" I get "ls: fo: No such file or directory". An "rm foo" also
gives "ls: foo: No such file or directory" even though it's listed
with "ls".

As an example, when I run configure for WindowMaker-0.6.3, the
config.log file has things like:

configure:2862: checking for XpmCreatePixmapFromData in -lXpm
configure:2881: cc -o conftest conftest.c -lXpm -L/usr/lib -lX11 1>&5
ld:
Can't create output file (No such file or directory)
configure: failed program was:
#line 2870 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
/* Override any gcc2 internal prototype to avoid an error. */
/* We use char because int might match the return type of a gcc2
builtin and then its argument prototype would still apply. */
char XpmCreatePixmapFromData();

int main() {
XpmCreatePixmapFromData()
; return 0; }

There is lots of space left in the drive.

Setup:
kelvin:~ > uname -r
2.0.30
kelvin:~ > rpm -q nfs-server
nfs-server-2.2beta16-8
ld version 2.7 (with BFD 2.7.0.2)
kelvin:~ > gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-unknown-linuxlibc1/2.7.2.2.f.2/specs
gcc version 2.7.2.2.f.2

I've tried this under 2.0.29, and various 2.2betaxx servers with the
same problem.

Hope this will help you in tracking the problem. But, it might not
even be related.

Carl.
