Really. X11 sort of worked first time on the MacII. But then thats what the generic dumb frame buffer code gets you on those kind of machines.
A lot depends on how different the platform is. You want to start with the idea that "This is a bit like the xyz box" (cut and paste) and the disk is sort of like that "cut and paste", and if I tweak this generic driver code a bit "twiddle twiddle" then it'll support my platform too
