As far as I have learned there is some mysterious reason that prevents the PnP BIOS to activate the "WaveTable" device it seems. The driver then does not detect the AWE32. Even though I have read the PnP spec, I did not find a clue that a device can request itself not being initialized. The idea to have to use isapnp and a sound module seems not the very best solution.
BTW: There's a problem in the vanilla 2.0.30: If a naive user (like me) selects "lowlevel drivers", but then says "n" to all offered drivers (i.e. to the only one) the kernel build fails, because soundcard.o references the lowlevel initialization. The sad thing there is that editing .config and cheating via "make -t zImage; rm drivers/sound/soundcard.o; make zImage" still causes the whole kernel to be rebuilt.
