pre-patch are the same as patch for the kernel version. You can' t use 2.0.31-3 and 2.0.31-2 at the same time. If you are using 2.0.31-2 and you want to upgrade to 2.0.31-3 you must first downgrade to 2.0.30 then upgrade the 2.0.30 to 2.0.31-3. When 2.0.31 will be relesed you must downgrade 2.0.31-3 to 2.0.30 and apply to it the 2.0.31 patch.
