glibc-2.1 will provide a method to automatically can avoid this.
But even today you can very easily use optimized versions. Simply write a little startup program which dlopen's the correct shared object. This shared object can be compiled for the specific platform. In the startup program you can determine the platform/processor and so choose the correct image to load.
