I have 2 IDE Zip drives. They are a bit crotchety and the jumper settings undocumented, but I have it working as an only drive and have also booted off of them successfully. I don't think any special kernel support is needed unless there should be some better hooks for removable media. If so they might well be useful on the SCSI side too.
