A friend of mine has a plain Dell 486, and has been running various versions of linux for about a year. He has used 2.0.29 since it came out with no problems. But when trying to boot a 2.0.30 kernel(both redhat 4.2 boot disk and self-compiled), it will only boot until the console: messages. Basically you just barely get a glimse of the console: messages when it reboots, and continues in this loop, like this:
uncompressing linux ... done now booting kernel console: 16 point font, 400 scans console: colour VGA + 80x25 1 x virtual console (max 63) [reboot]
This machine works perfectly with all other (stable) kernels, so it's unlikely to be a hardware problem.
It's a plain 486 (Dell) and a SMC Elite ethernet card. I don't have the details right here..
Any ideas what might be wrong?
