Do a tcpdump and see what kind of packages float over your network. The Linux machines might play ping-pong with something on your network.
Debian 1.2/3? Are you using NIS with more than 100 users? Then get rid of the + entries in the /etc/group file. NIS will saturate your Network reading the group information again and again if this is the case.
