Seems that root is not able to chgrp things willy-nilly any more. Is this intentional?
This is with 2.1.36, fairly generic RedHat 4.1, fileutils 3.13-3, libc 5.4.25:
[root@wdcn0b dcn0]# chown -R dcn0.dcn0 . chown: .: Operation not permitted [root@wdcn0b dcn0]# df . Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on /dev/sda1 50557 28137 19809 59% / [root@wdcn0b dcn0]# ls -altr total 2 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 May 2 12:43 . drwxrwxr-x 6 root root 1024 May 2 12:43 .. [root@wdcn0b dcn0]# chown dcn0 . [root@wdcn0b dcn0]# chgrp dcn0 . chgrp: you are not a member of group `dcn0': Operation not permitted [root@wdcn0b dcn0]# newgrp dcn0 [root@wdcn0b dcn0]# chgrp dcn0 . [root@wdcn0b dcn0]#
