SubjectRe: Complete lock of 2.1.38 w X and Netscape
I have also had 2.1.38 lock with me while running X (XFree86 3.2) and
Netscape. (sorry if this has been resolved... I get the kernel digest).

It was a complete lock. No console switching, no mouse movement, even my
LED CPU status on the paralell port froze. At the time Netscape 3.01 was
loading a file (no Java or anything fancy.. it was
http://afterstep.edoc.com if you must know).

Afterwards no messages in the logs, although since I rebooted I had some
corrupted files. [And I made the big mistake of running e2fsck on a
mounted filesystem... not until I got the message halfway trhough (and too
late) saying PROGRAMMING BUG OR SOME BONEHEAD IS USING e2fsck ON A MOUNTED
FILESYSTEM... yes I was that bonehead. After I found my slackware
bootdisk I think I got it all fixed while only losing a few open text
files).

Anyway I have a 486DX2 66, 20 Meg of Ram. I have never had this happen
before. I am thinking maybe it has something wrong with netscape. My
hardware doesn't really have the RAM to run netscape (w/o swapping) so I
usually run it remotely and pipe it over to my display. But today I
thought I would run it locally, and that is when the whole machine locked.
It seems everyone else with the problem have been running netscape too?

Well I hope this helps in some way. I have never COMPLETELY locked Linux
before, and it scared me. Anyway, later.

Vince
