In recent kernels I noticed some strange memory corruption. This turns out to be caused by free_initmem() in arch/i386/mm/init.c. (It frees too much.) The easiest fix is to comment out this entire routine. I was too lazy too think about what the proper rounding is in case the routine is not commented out.
