After applying the patch, recompiling, and restarting, my kernel would 
oops immediately upon trying to initialize parport.

I found this behavior less that desirable.

Inspection showed that one section of the patch to parport_init.c had
failed. The reason was that the patch was looking for

- "$Revision: 1.3 $");

whereas the applicable line in my source was

- "$Revision: 1.1.2.4 $");

After correcting this problem all was well.
