With 2.1.27, traceroute works erratically for me. For instance, hepnsf and snupdk are sitting on the same Ethernet:
traceroute to snupdk (155.135.31.45), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 comsvr2 (155.135.1.200) 142.816 ms 137.595 ms 139.468 ms 2 155.135.1.254 (155.135.1.254) 139.425 ms 139.289 ms 139.479 ms 3 snupdk (155.135.31.45) 139.555 ms 138.048 ms 139.49 ms
traceroute to hepnsf.csudh.edu (155.135.31.20), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 comsvr2 (155.135.1.200) 149.426 ms 147.487 ms 139.586 ms 2 155.135.1.254 (155.135.1.254) 149.435 ms 138.989 ms 139.503 ms 3 * * * 4 *
% what `which traceroute` /usr/bin/traceroute Copyright (c) 1990, 1993 traceroute.c 8.1 (Berkeley) 6/6/93
While compiling this kernel, I got the following error in net/core/sock.c:
sock.c: In function `sock_getsockopt': sock.c:331: warning: `err' might be used uninitialized in this function ___ Trevor Johnson <trevor@jpj.net>
