Watch out -- you changed the subject between the beginning of the message and the end, which is a good sign you're heading for trouble.
The answer is: You don't need the *very latest* but you sure as sh*t need the versions listed in the documentation that comes with the kernel. If you don't, you will run into trouble -- if you're lucky, it simply won't compile; if you're unlucky, it won't execute correctly. The documentation also lists where you can download the required versions from.
Believe me -- I've learned this lesson the hard way.
