Doing "make bzimage" will allow you to use larger kernels, if you have a somewhat recent version of LILO or loadlin. It's documented in Documentation/initrd.txt. That file, BTW, could probably stand updating, since the initrd and bzimage patch is now in the mainstream kernel, and more recent versions of LILO and loadlin are now available.
