I upgraded to smbfs 2.0.1, patched and recompiled my kernel (2.0.29) and the problem persists, although I'm still having no problems with kernel 2.0.22. The error, at least with a cp operation, apparently lies beneith a call to chmod(2). An strace of a copy operation ("foo" is the target of the copy) shows:
chmod("foo", 0100640) = -1 EIO (I/O error)
In the case of cp, the operation completes successfully, but declares "I/O Error" to stderr. Other file write processes fail in ways indicating that this error may also be responsible, I don't know. I have no such problems with my regular e2fs filesystem.
My kernel .config file follows. Any other details I can supply will be gladly provided.
