Umm, did you read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes? You need to
upgrade a few things, including pppd. Kernel 2.0.xx needs pppd 2.2.0f (or
presumably higher). Kernel 1.2.13 will *not* run pppd 2.2.0f. You will
need to choose which kernel you want to have pppd support in. (I suggest
you upgrade everything you need for 2.0.27 and run that.)

It wasn't a kernel problem. It was an rtfm problem. :)
