Hasn't anyone else done: (in /usr/src)

[cananian@cananian src]$ ls -l linux
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Dec 12 00:16 linux -> linux-2.1.71
[cananian@cananian src]$ rm linux
[cananian@cananian src]$ ln -s linux-2.1.72 linux
[cananian@cananian src]$ tar xzvf linux-2.1.72.tar.gz

and let tar create the directory through the link?
This works on 2.0.x and 2.1.x certainly.
