From my experiments with my 2.1.56 kernel, I notice that byte-counting in >/proc/net/dev seems to be working just fine - except that the bytes it >counts are shown in the lo device instead of the ppp0 device that I'm >pinging through.
On my system bytes are counted on the lo device for data transferred there, there is no apparent problem with this (but I haven't checked very closely).
As for ppp it just doesn't count the bytes. Install this patch (against 2.1.45 but still applies to 2.1.65) ftp://snoopy.virtual.net.au/Linux/kernel/patch/byte_count.45 to fix the problem.
