The way memory is mapped by hardware normally interleaves the SIMMs so a bad spot on a SIMM will cause crashes in any setup on a good box.

Now that is a different puzzle. Given the other randomness I'd suspect the SIMM or boards. You could perhaps try 256Mb using the other SIMMs if thats a legal setup on your box (ie pull the known to work ones)
