Sorry to be a continued bringer of bad news.
During the course of applying patch-2.1.63 to an NFS-mounted tree (and cleaning up a large number of *.orig files afterwards), linux/include disappeared. I resurrected it by forcibly umount-ing the server as root and letting the automounter re-grab it. Bingo! Everything fine.
This was the only log entry:

Server and client were using 2.1.62 (baseline, save for Cyrix patch). The server ran unfsd. This is my standard test setup that managed to trigger numerous bugs in the past.
