Well, as I said, I _had_ the problem; my workaround was to make sure that
my named knew all the IPs needed to get on the net.

Specifically, strace showed stuff like "ping 1.2.3.4" causing UDP
datagrams sent to the DNS port; when bind wasn't running, this failed fast
and the programs went on with their stuff; when bind was running, it tried
to ask the outside DNS, which lead to gigantic timeouts.

One configuration was so bad that, after booting in the morning, when I
came back home in the evening, the machine _still_ hadn't managed to get
to the login prompt.

Since I fed all the stuff to named, though, it seems to run fine. One of
these days I'm going to try and find out what goes wrong.
