Peter,

You are a genius! I rearranged the order of things in the rc3 and 5
directories (this is a Red Hat system) and rebooted -- no more portmapper
errors! You're right, somehow 2.0.x managed to cope with this just fine;
2.1 is perhaps more strict? At any rate, you're absolutely correct:
sometimes the cause of an error can be elusive. :/
