Subject2.0.27: garbage kills kernel at partition scan

With a 2940, if the partition tables are hosed, it will go into an infinite
scsi failure when it tries to look at the partition tables. There is no way
to even get far enough with root=something-else and fdisk. I had to use one
of the 'other' operating systems fdisk to clear the garbage out, then I was
able to boot linux from floppy and run fdisk... -Tom
