I did a clean compile off of the source of linux-2.1.21.tar.gz
It'll die after this: VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
Instantly.. it complains of a NULL dereference from virtual address 00000000, in the process 'swapper'. I did not write down the specifics, but I assume that others are going to run into this problem.
My old 2.1.20 boots fine.
If other people don't have this problem, then I'll get the pad o' paper out.
